Patients for Hospice & Palliative Care
Among terminal cancer patients who are medically diagnosed as having no possibility of fundamental recovery despite active treatment and who will gradually deteriorate and die within a few months, those who meet the following criteria:
- Patients who no longer benefit from active chemotherapy
- Patients who need pain relief and symptom management
- Patients who are conscious, able to communicate, and understand their condition
- Patients recommended for hospice care by their primary care physician or hospice staff
Frequently asked questions
- Should I notify a patient that he or she is in the terminal stage?
- It's important to tell someone that they're terminally ill because they want to know their exact disease status and future disease progression.
- Is there no more treatment available?
- No. Even if chemotherapy is not performed, treatment for symptoms such as pain, vomiting, dyspnea, and ascites that make patients difficult should be performed more actively.
- Will the pain be very severe? When does the pain occur?
-
End-stage cancer does not necessarily make the pain worse.
However, many patients experience pain caused by cancer or cancer treatment, and most of the cancer pain can be controlled with active pain treatment. - How much longer will the patient live?
-
According to statistics, the average life expectancy of terminal cancer patients is 3 to 4 months. However, this is an average estimate and no one can accurately predict how much time is left.
Therefore, rather than limiting the remaining time to 3 or 6 months, it is better to observe the progress of the patient and focus on each day. - How should a patient spend their time if Tertiary Hospital says there is no way to treat them anymore?
-
Even if you do not receive chemotherapy, you should stay well controlled with symptoms such as pain.
It is important for patients to spend the remaining time with their families meaningfully, doing what they want to do and what they must do.
